At Centennial College, the principal responsibility of the student is to focus his/her efforts on learning-related activities. Attendance and participation in the classroom are critical to the success of each student. The following policies apply to all students enrolled at Centennial College. Attendance PolicyCentennial College believes that regular attendance at classes promotes good study habits. Therefore, attendance at classes is compulsory. The Centennial College Code of Conduct is applicable to all students enrolled at the College and contains the following Attendance Policy. - The student is expected to attend all classes beginning with the first class on the first day of the semester.
- The student will attend all classes for the full duration of the class room period.
- The student will arrange to take restroom breaks before and after class hours.
- Any student who leaves class once it has begun will not be allowed to return to that class session and will be marked absent.
Students will be expected to attend all of their classes. Failure to do so will result in the student being requested to withdraw from the class where excessive absences have occurred (see below).
Students are expected to arrange all appointments (medical, dental, etc.) outside of their weekly course schedules. Students will be notified of their status in each course according to the following procedure: - After 2 absences in a course, a notice will be posted in the student lounge (by student number).
- After 4 absences (3 for PHE), written warning from the College Coordinator will be given to the student.
- After 6 absences (5 for PHE), written notice from the College Coordinator suspending the student from that class will be given to the student by the College Coordinator.
The grade achieved from the beginning of the semester to the date of suspension will stand as the final grade. Suspension in one course will not affect the grades or status in other courses Students should notify the Registrar of their absence if it is for a prolonged period of time because of hospitalization or death in the immediate family. These situations, however, do not exempt the student from meeting the requirements of the course; the student is required to find out from each teacher what is required to complete the course successfully. For any anticipated periods of prolonged absence, the student must obtain authorisation from the Registrar in advance. The student will not be permitted to return to classes without this authorisation.
Punctuality Policy - Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each course period by the instructor.
- Any student who arrives in a classroom after attendance has been taken but prior to five (5) minutes having elapsed, will be marked as late.
- Any student who arrives at the classroom five (5) minutes or more after class has begun will be marked absent and will not be permitted to enter that class.
- If a student is marked absent, the attendance policy will apply.
Classroom Protocol
- Food and beverages will not be permitted in the classroom.
- Any student in possession of a pager, cellular phone, or other communication device, will ensure that the device is turned off during every classroom period.
- Audio listening devices such as portable radios, portable CD players, etc. will not be permitted in the classroom unless they are specifically approved by the course instructor for learning purposes.
- Repeated occurrences of inappropriate conduct such as entering a class late, disruptive behaviour or lack of decorum will be referred to the academic team for review. The student will then be subject to whatever remedial action is deemed appropriate by the team.
- Any student who is asked to leave a classroom because of inappropriate behaviour will be considered absent for the purpose of the application of the Code of Conduct.
Assigned work
- When work is assigned to students, it must be submitted to the instructor at the beginning of the class on the day that it is due.
- Failure to submit the work by the deadline will result in the total mark for the paper being devalued by ten (10%) per day for a maximum of 4 days (weekends count for 20%). However, no work will be accepted after the instructor has returned corrections of the work to other students.
Cheating - Any student who submits work which he or she has not prepared and written through his or her own efforts, will be considered as having cheated. This includes plagiarism and copying the work of other students.
- Any student guilty of cheating on an assignment or a test will be awarded a mark of zero (0) on the work in question.
Smoking - Centennial College's smoking policy is under review in accordance with new provincial legislation which took effect on May 31st, 2006.
- Centennial is an entirely non-smoking facility. We are proud to offer students, staff, and faculty a smoke-free environment.
- Smoking is not permitted in any part of Centennial College including the vestibules at the entrances of the building and outside the building at the front entrance. Repeated violation of the smoking policy may result in expulsion from the College.
