CREATIVE ARTS

Program of Study
Centennial College’s Creative Arts Program aims to introduce students to the diversity of contemporary creative art practices. Our program inspires personal creativity, instills an appreciation for cultural history, and fosters the acquisition of analytical, critical and practical skills needed to excel in post CEGEP education and beyond.

Introduction

The primary goal of Creative Arts is to help students recognize their own talents and to provide them with the confidence and skills to enter the University Program (and artistic future) that best matches their personal objectives. The emphasis is on providing students with learning skills that will allow them to readily adapt to the challenges that they will meet in their academic and future professional careers.

Program Structure

The Creative Arts program is a competency-based program that has been structured to provide students with a progressive learning sequence in order that they may build skill sets and acquire knowledge in an orderly and constructive manner.

To obtain a DEC in Creative Arts requires a total of 54 2/3 credits.

General Education (Core & Complementary courses): 26 2/3 credits

4 English courses (one of which is specific to Creative Arts).

3 Humanities courses (one of which is specific to Creative Arts).

2 French courses (one of which may be specific to Creative Arts).

3 Physical Education courses and 2 Complementary courses.

Program Specific Courses: 28 credits

The Creative Arts Program follows a five phase sequence, each of which reflects a stage of creative development.

Phase 1: Exploration

Students are introduced to the wealth and breadth of the creative arts, exploring a variety of artistic genres and establishing a common skill base including visual literacy, writing abilities and computation. Courses in art and cultural history, guest speakers from various art milieus and visits to cultural institutions extend learning beyond the classroom to the living world of artistic practice and dissemination.

Phase Two: Orientation of Interests

Thematic courses drawn from the fields of Fine Arts (Painting and Drawing), Film and Photography, Creative Writing and Music are offered as options through which students may hone a more specialized interest in the methods and materials of the creative arts while acquiring an essential scholastic knowledge base. A Dance option is offered for those students concurrently enrolled in the Ballet Divertimento program.

Phase Three: Portfolio Planning

Selecting study and career paths and planning the production of a portfolio of work that demonstrates creativity, technical mastery and a student’s potential to succeed comprise this phase. Mentors from the artistic community assist students in developing their creative voices and in cultivating community contacts within their particular field of interest.

Phase Four: Skills Development

Students consolidate advanced skills and techniques within their area of interest in preparation for transition to a more specialized level of study. An emphasis is placed on the conceptualization and cultivation of creative production, and on the development of critical analysis, communication skills and aesthetic awareness.

Phase Five: Creative Projects and Integration

In this phase shared multi-disciplinary courses provide an open framework within which students can produce special projects that reflect their learning and that are relevant to their chosen university program. An Annual Arts Festival of exhibitions and performances offers an opportunity to showcase the work of graduating students in the Creative Arts program, and provides a public venue to launch Centennial’s very own emerging artists and performers!
